So sorry, he was a very good looking young man.
My cousin Troy committed suicide at the age of 20. He had it all too, or so everyone else thought. Unfortunately, he never realized how many people loved him and admired him and now he's been gone for 13 years.
I will never, ever forget the grief I felt when I heard the news. He and I were only 1 month in age apart and we had grown up together. All the "what ifs" that sprang forth the following days and weeks were agonizing to all of us who were close to him. We all saw the signs way too late and the only good was that we all have drawn closer to each other and try to remember to keep close to each other in any way we can.
Try to remember all the good memories and share them with each other.
It's such a loss, so very sorry to hear about it.

what i mean is, are there regular reunions where one can go and meet other ex-jw's face to face?

Asking Questions At Meetings!

reading the other thread about answering at meetings gave me the cold shivers.

there is a fundamental part of being a witness that i've never understood, that just seems so at odds with the philosophy outlined by jesus and the apostles in the new testament - why weren't we allowed to ask questions at the meetings?

The one time I asked a question (after answering a simple question) I remember the elder stammering and only half answering my question. Afterwards he said
he'd look into it for me, but he never answered me.
I remember a few friends nearby looking at me uncomfortably at the time and I never did that again.

How often did you comment at meetings?

i have a theory and i'd like to put it to the test here.. i would be willing to bet that the posters who post a great deal probably commented more than the average publisher at the meetings.. i know it's true in my case.. on simon's forum we have the whole range of 'publishers-' from those that comment a lot ---down to those that are just there.

I used to comment at least once or twice during the watchtower, a lot more during bookstudies. I always tried to give something a little different than the usual too. I think I was trying to make people think outside of the black and white thinking that was presented in the study.

I never answered any of the questions that were really obvious though. I detested those things. That's when the brainwashing attitude would really bother me.

I've been studying for about a year now...

i've been studying with the jw's for about a year now.

i know that by nature (or nurture!

) i have an addictive personality so i have tried to be real careful that i'm doing the right thing by getting involved with them.

Do your homework now, because once you're a dub, you won't be allowed to read anything that is about the witnesses that doesn't come straight from the organization. So, you're not baptized, so do it NOW!

I disassociated myself, but eventually if I kept asking questions it was obvious that they would try to disfellowship me for being "doubtful" on certain issues.

I know that if you've studied for a year that you're most likely the sort to learn all about something thoroughly before jumping into it. I grew up with it so it was an emotional thing for me to get more involved. As much as it hurt to realize that they aren't any closer to God than anyone else, I did grow and gather many good skills as a witness. I think it helped me be a more moral person, but it also alieniated me from most of my other relatives.

We did the easter egg hunt and ham dinner thing today. Then after imbibing a little more wine than I should have, I took a nice afternoon nap. Am raiding the kids easter baskets now, yummy!

Might have to soak in a hot tub in a bit before dinner, lol. I love sundays now...
